Introduction to the full plot of "Female Worker":

The story begins in the early 1970s. The female protagonist, Pu Xiaoti, is academically excellent and has lofty ideals. After graduating from junior high school, she, along with her classmates Zhen Zhicheng and Bai Erbao, had prepared to go to the countryside for re-education but ended up being assigned to work at a shipyard instead. Old Yao, who was responsible for the allocation at the school and had once been a member of the shipyard, had a very poor reputation among the workers, and Pu Xiaoti and her two companions were thus implicated — none of the shipyard masters were willing to take them on as apprentices. The new workers hadn't even touched the welding torches when they were assigned to dig air-raid shelters. To prove themselves, Pu Xiaoti led Zhen Zhicheng and Bai Erbao in hard work, taking the lead in everything, and kept the floating red flag firmly in their possession, changing everyone's impressions and becoming official apprentice workers.

Despite being exhausted from work every day, Pu Xiaoti continued to read and study. Her efforts did not go unrewarded; her poems were successively published in newspapers, and she also became the main player of the workshop women's basketball team and a cultural backbone of the shipyard. Pu Xiaoti's excellence, kindness, and beauty attracted many admiring glances, and both Zhen Zhicheng and Bai Erbao were among the many suitors. Zhen Zhicheng was kind and sincere but struggled to express his feelings, silently helping Pu Xiaoti with everything. Bai Erbao, on the other hand, was smooth-talking and cunning, always looking for shortcuts in his work and only talking big. Both pursued Pu Xiaoti in different ways, yet Pu Xiaoti's heart was always set on Gao Haiqun, a classmate who had joined the army and gone far away.

Ning Xilan, another classmate who harbored affection for Gao Haiqun, worked at the city library. Pu Xiaoti always regarded her as her best friend and extended a helping hand whenever Ning Xilan encountered difficulties. However, Ning Xilan was jealous of Pu Xiaoti and hesitated to help her get a library borrowing card. In order to let Pu Xiaoti read the books she wanted, Zhen Zhicheng used all sorts of methods, even copying books overnight several times. He was eventually reported for copying the banned book "The Second Handshake" and imprisoned. Pu Xiaoti, who had been unaware of the situation, developed misunderstandings about Zhen Zhicheng and criticized him for not striving enough.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Bai Erbao launched an aggressive pursuit of Pu Xiaoti, sometimes resorting to unscrupulous means. Although Pu Xiaoti was extremely repulsed by his harassment, she felt powerless to stop it. During one instance at work, Bai Erbao's纠缠 (persistent attention) caused him to accidentally injure his leg. Pu Xiaoti initially felt very sorry and took good care of him, which unfortunately gave Bai Erbao more chances to get closer to her. Bai Erbao then used the "work injury" as leverage to demand that the organization arrange a talk with Pu Xiaoti, hoping she would marry him. This caught Pu Xiaoti off guard, and she grew even more repelled by Bai Erbao. The workshop director and masters took turns talking to Pu Xiaoti, even Master Hao, who had mentored Pu Xiaoti, said good things about Bai Erbao. Under pressure, Pu Xiaoti finally disregarded her mother's strong opposition and married Bai Erbao.

After their marriage, Bai Erbao's lazy and selfish nature quickly became apparent. At this time, the national college entrance examination was reinstated, and Teacher Zhong urged her two most talented students, Pu Xiaoti and Ning Xilan, to seize this opportunity. Pu Xiaoti's fighting spirit was reignited; she wanted to use this chance to fulfill her dream of attending university. Unexpectedly, Bai Erbao strongly opposed it. Pu Xiaoti originally intended to fight against him, but then discovered she was pregnant. Bai Erbao's mother, wanting a grandson, even threatened suicide. For the sake of the entire family, Pu Xiaoti painfully abandoned the college entrance exam.

The feudal-minded Bai Mother eagerly awaited Pu Xiaoti giving birth to a boy for the Bai family. Upon hearing that Pu Xiaoti had given birth to a daughter, she was greatly disappointed and refused to help take care of the child as previously promised. Pu Xiaoti's mother also avoided seeing her because she had married Bai Erbao against the family's wishes. Pu Xiaoti had no choice but to bear the responsibility of raising her daughter alone. All of this was seen by Zhen Zhicheng after his rehabilitation and release from prison. It pained him deeply that he hadn't taken good care of Pu Xiaoti, and he felt deeply guilty. However, Pu Xiaoti consoled Zhen Zhicheng instead, encouraging him to face all difficulties with a smile.
