Silent Beauty plot introduction:

The picturesque Wuzhen and Suzhou, during the years from 1924 to 1937.

Wuzhen girl Ju'er is naturally beautiful and charming. Due to her family's poverty and inability to raise another child, Ju'er has a younger sister who was given away when she was very young.

Ju'er's father works at the silk shop of the wealthy local gentleman, Mr. Shan Jingcheng. One night, a huge stone roller in the dyeing workshop falls off its wooden frame and crushes his head... The master, Mr. Shan, gives a few bolts of silk as a settlement for Ju'er’s father's funeral. Later, Mr. Shan persuades Ju'er's mother to bring Ju'er along to work for the Shan family...
