Starring Aaron Kwok, Grace Wong, and Carmen Hu
The original "Trick," featuring the duo of Aaron Kwok and Grace Wong, was a tremendous success last year, ranking second in TVB's 2008 drama ratings, only behind "For Love or Money." In this series, Chief Yu leads the D.I.E team to solve many complex cases, and his relationship with Inspector Hsing captivates audiences. This year, TVB launched the sequel "Trick B," continuing with the same cast for the quirky D.I.E department. Besides maintaining the humor from the first season, it also enhances the suspense and reasoning elements, making the plot even more engaging.
In addition, the "love child" between Aaron Kwok and Grace Wong—Baby B—appears in the series and becomes the main storyline. Baby B not only inherits Dad Anjie’s supernatural abilities but is also portrayed as a mischievous and adorable character. During an interview with our newspaper at the "Breast Health Charity Walk" event, Grace Wong revealed various fun facts about her role as a wife, mother, and detective in the show.
As for the marital aspects, Aaron Kwok brings real-life experiences onto the screen. He previously mentioned in an interview with Carina Chak that he would incorporate interesting daily life anecdotes with his wife, Connie Au, as well as their family life into the drama, making it feel more authentic to viewers. Grace Wong shared with us that although she lacks personal experience in marriage and parenting, working alongside Aaron has taught her quite a bit.
It's reported that the producer of the show gathered opinions from netizens regarding the continuation, noticing that everyone guessed there might be some sort of love triangle involving the main characters. After deliberation, they decided such a plotline was too cliché. Therefore, the romantic lines were shifted to supporting actors instead of having another extramarital affair for Anjie. They designed a case involving Anjie's first love, creating a false love triangle that causes small conflicts between Anjie and Grace Wong's characters.
In the storyline, Grace Wong plays a mother who is eager to solve cases. She even brings her baby to work at the D.I.E office. By chance, she discovers her baby possesses special abilities. For instance, when Chief Guo Feng predicts football matches, the baby makes laughing (win) or crying (lose) expressions matching the results. To prove her detective skills are no less than her husband's, she uses Baby B's abilities to find clues.
Baby dramas and puppy scenes always have a fan base. For this production, three real babies were hired to play the part of the gifted baby in rotation. Originally, the three babies were similar in age, appearance, and size. However, during filming, one baby fell ill and lost weight, resulting in Baby B appearing fatter or thinner at times, sometimes cuter and other times peculiar. Grace Wong joked that in reality, Aaron Kwok is a professional babysitter, yet even he was intimidated by the baby during their scenes together. Babies are independent little beings, and getting them to cooperate with adults isn't easy. As for Grace Wong, who has no maternal experience, would she feel out of place?
Introduction to "Trick B":
TVB's new drama "Trick B" held its opening ceremony with main actors Aaron Kwok, Grace Wong, George Shiu, Carmen Hu, Mandy Lo, and Michael Li all in attendance, marking the official start of filming. The first season of "Trick" was highly popular, averaging a rating of 34 points with a peak of 41 points (based on per-episode ratings). If calculated per minute, the highest rating reached 44 points. Additionally, the first season had two endings where viewers voted for their preferred conclusion, ultimately changing the tragic ending to a happy one. This is somewhat similar to the 2004 drama "Laughing Gor," which aired a tragic ending followed by complaints and then a happier conclusion. Both shows demonstrated their high popularity and showcased TVB's skill in comedic mystery investigation dramas. Given the immense popularity of the first season, the production of "Trick B" was expected, officially starting filming and estimated to air in the first half of 2009. Fans of the show should patiently await its release.
On January 19th, "Trick B" premiered after "Heart of Greed 3." The first season of "Trick" had impressive ratings, averaging 34 points, but the specially crafted happy ending was criticized by some viewers as far-fetched and unsatisfying. Nevertheless, the producer assures that the second season will conclude with a satisfying happy ending. Will "Trick B" surpass the first season's success?
Regarding the plot, "The Magnificent Businessman" and "Trick B" both offer intriguing cases equally appealing to the audience. "The Magnificent Businessman" focuses on business, using five major cases to simplify complex commercial theories for ordinary viewers. Last week's episode featured "Saving Chi's Noodle Shop," where Stephen Chow, playing a brilliant businessman and acquisition expert, educated the audience on fair trading principles and explained the relationship between CEO and the board of directors, teaching viewers how to dismiss and re-elect a CEO. Subsequent cases include "Homeless Man Becomes King of Recycled Paper," "New Generation Elderly Home," "Unraveling the Rice Industry Deadlock," and "Unveiling the Hidden Conspiracy." These cases not only involve commercial theories but also emotional entanglements.
In contrast, "Trick B" continues the traditional Hong Kong police-criminal theme. It expands on the previous season's use of supernatural abilities in solving cases. The series primarily revolves around four bizarre cases: "Flipping Murder," "Mysterious Star Suicide," "Fruit Fatalities," and "Dream Murders." Towards the end, Aaron Kwok's character "Zilang" mysteriously gets attacked, and producer Raymond Kwan reveals this will be the most exciting part of the entire series.
"The Magnificent Businessman" currently enjoys good ratings, largely attributed to Stephen Chow's performance. Many netizens commented that they were drawn to the show because of Stephen Chow. Whether it's the comedy segments, Stephen Chow's rogue image, or his signature witty dialogues, these are the main reasons viewers continue watching. Compared to previous works like "Romancing Pan Yue," "Laughing Detective," and "Jian Ren Jian," Stephen Chow's role this time is different—a smart corporate doctor despite being rogue and foul-mouthed.
Aaron Kwok gained popularity last year through "Trick," but whether he can successfully compete against Stephen Chow remains uncertain. Stephen Chow's portrayal is stronger, embodying more Hong Kong cultural characteristics, resonating better with the audience. Moreover, "The Magnificent Businessman" features Laughing Gor (Adrian Cheng) as a wealthy art-loving young man named Anzu Lien.
Given Laughing Gor's popularity from "Police Story" and Stephen Chow's already established reputation, their combined forces likely give them an advantage over Aaron Kwok's solo efforts.
Reputation comparison: "The Magnificent Businessman" has a head start.
Both "The Magnificent Businessman" and "Trick B" are airing around the same period, making it difficult to predict which will gain higher ratings. However, "The Magnificent Businessman" started a week earlier and already shows promising results. According to TVB's weekly ratings, "The Magnificent Businessman" opened strong with the first two episodes reaching 31 points, though no surprising numbers yet, long-term ratings are expected to remain stable.
On the other hand, the previous season of "Trick" achieved 41 points. With the original cast returning and airing shortly after "The Magnificent Businessman," it benefits from advantageous timing and location—drawing viewers to TVB's screen before each episode airs and occupying a prime time slot traditionally attracting the most viewers. Therefore, as long as the quality of the show doesn't falter, the ratings should remain solid.
