Plot Introduction:

In the autumn of 1948, the battle in Northeast China was intense. Chiang Kai-shek arrived in Beiping (now Beijing), demanding that Fu Zuoyi, commander-in-chief of the North China "Bandit Extermination" forces, send reinforcements to attack Jinzhou. Fu politely declined. Chiang then secretly ordered Fu to launch a surprise attack on Xibaipo. Fu's mobilization of troops caused an alert in Beiping. Li Bingquan, an undercover agent working for the Pingming Daily newspaper inside the "Bandit Extermination Headquarters," left the city alone to investigate and sent this critical military intelligence via the Communist Party's secret radio station to Xibaipo. The central party immediately deployed a trap to counterattack. With divine calculation, they performed a perfect "Empty City Stratagem," successfully thwarting this conspiracy. The leaked information caused suspicion among the Military Intelligence Bureau (MIB), who began investigations, secretly pointing their fingers at Fu Zuoyi.

One day, Yan Yiwen, the deputy director of the press office under General Fu's command, welcomed a reporter from the Ta Kung Pao newspaper into the "Bandit Extermination Headquarters." She was Fu Dongju, an underground member of the Communist Party. To secure Fu Zuoyi’s participation in peace talks and achieve the peaceful liberation of Beiping, the North China Urban Work Department approved her request to return to Beiping. Upon meeting, father and daughter each had their own concerns but couldn't reveal them outright, only carefully probing each other. It wasn’t until one day when Fu Dongju discovered her father secretly reading the book "On the Coalition Government" that she realized her father had already been considering...

(Note: The story continues with more details about how Fu Zuoyi eventually chose to negotiate with the Chinese Communist Party, leading to the peaceful liberation of Beiping without further bloodshed.)
