In 1627, at the age of 17, Chongzhen ascended the throne, inheriting a Ming Dynasty riddled with problems from Emperor Xizong of Ming. Domestically, powerful ministers like Wei Zhongxian held control over the administration, making Chongzhen essentially a puppet emperor, as all decrees came from Wei Zhongxian's hands. However, Chongzhen was not an incompetent ruler.
