The story of "Shanghai风云Struggle" takes place in Shanghai at the beginning of the 20th century. Ma Xiaotian (played by Ching Siu-Chow) was originally a rich man's son, who left his parents' home due to his dissatisfaction with the regulations of the feudal system and his involvement in an assassination attempt on an official, accompanied by his servant. Having been pampered since childhood, he struggled to survive in society, even resorting to pulling rickshaws for a living. His girlfriend, Sun Xiaodong (played by Yip Yuk-Cheung), sang at a Shanghai nightclub and gradually became famous in the city for her sweet voice. Ma Xiaotian began to feel increasingly inferior. At this time, he met the mistress of a powerful Shanghai figure, Cao Xueru, who recommended him for a job with Cao Xueru. This woman had feelings for Ma Xiaotian and, in order to get him, hired someone to rape Sun Xiaodong. Feeling unworthy of Xiaotian, Xiaodong accepted the persistent pursuit of the wealthy Huo Jiacheng. Heartbroken, Ma Xiaotian got drunk and had a sexual encounter with Cao's mistress. Cao's daughter, Cao Peishan, returned from studying abroad and gradually fell in love with Ma Xiaotian, eventually becoming engaged to him. In a fit of rage, Cao's mistress revealed her one-night stand with Xiaotian to Cao Xueru, who expelled her from his house. She angrily went to Japan, vowing to return and wash away her shame. On the day of Ma Xiaotian and Cao Peishan's wedding, Cao Xueru was brutally murdered by a gang, allowing Ma Xiaotian to become the heir of the Cao family, leading to a struggle for control over Cao's former subordinates. It turned out that the assassination was orchestrated by Huo Jiacheng, who was dissatisfied with Cao's dominance.
