"In That Distant Place" Plot Introduction:

In the snowstorm, soldiers push the truck forward with great difficulty. Yuan Ying is already in a coma. Yuan Ying's voiceover: If I could choose again, I would still choose Kunlun Mountain...

Early 1970s. The Kunlun Military District came to the school to recruit soldiers. All the students eagerly signed up. Yuan Ying, Ding Haotian, Lü Qiang, and Fang Yang all registered. However, the recruiting platoon leader Wen Kai saw that Yuan Ying was physically weak and did not let her sign up because life on the Kunlun Mountain was too tough. After returning home, Yuan Ying pestered her parents for help. Her father Yuan Yousheng, who had just been reinstated as an old cadre, agreed to use his connections to get her in.

Ding Haotian and Yuan Ying were neighbors. Normally, it was Ding Haotian who took care of Yuan Ying, and they were close like brother and sister. Both Ding Haotian and Lü Qiang, along with Fang Yang, liked Yuan Ying, but Ding Haotian dared not express his feelings directly to Yuan Ying while Lü Qiang was bold and straightforward. One night, Lü Qiang invited Yuan Ying to the park where he confessed his love to her and gave her a beautiful hairpin as a keepsake. Suddenly, Lü Qiang kissed Yuan Ying and was discovered by others, leading them to chase him thinking he was a hooligan. They ran to Ding Haotian’s house to hide, arousing his suspicion.

When Yuan Ying returned home, she thought about the kiss from Lü Qiang, feeling both scared yet sweetly excited, marking the budding of her first romance.

Wen Kai visited Yuan Yousheng, bringing a letter. Upon seeing the letter, Yuan Yousheng and his wife Cui Lian were greatly shocked, assuming that Wei Tie had broken his promise from years ago. When Yuan Yousheng and Cui Lian learned that Yuan Ying was going to join Wei Tie's unit, they decided against letting Yuan Ying enlist. This caused a big argument between Yuan Ying and her parents. An angry Cui Lian wanted to call Wei Tie to reason with him, but Yuan Yousheng stopped her.

Wei Tie was about to visit the border defense post for inspection. Gui Hongyun was helping to pack things when the phone rang. Their daughter Wei Jie quickly picked up the phone, but there was no sound. Wei Tie asked whose call it was, and Wei Jie dialed back to the operator, who said it was a long-distance call from the civilian line. Wei Tie didn’t take it seriously, but Gui Hongyun felt uneasy inside. Ding Haotian, Lü Qiang, and Fang Yang left with the army. Feeling empty-hearted, Yuan Ying wasn't willing to give up. She found Wei Tie's letter at home and hitched a ride to catch up with the troops.
