An HBO television movie divided into three parts, reflecting the changes in the American lesbian movement and their circumstances through stories of different residents in a house across three periods.

1961: Edith (Vanessa Redgrave) and Abby (Marian Seldes) spent a lifetime together in love, both growing old. Abby was injured in an accident, and Edith stayed up all night at the hospital waiting to see her, but she wasn't allowed to see Abby one last time because only family members were permitted to visit critically ill patients. Abby's nephew came to claim her inheritance; though the house was jointly mortgaged by Edith and Abby, it was registered under Abby's name. Their relationship not being legally recognized, Edith had no choice but to leave sorrowfully.

1972: Four female college students lived together. They enthusiastically initiated the lesbian movement on campus but were marginalized by women's rights organizations. These four women advocated for women's liberation and strongly disliked overly masculine women. Thus, when Linda (Michelle Williams) met Amy (Chloe Sevigny), a very masculine T, she was quite hesitant internally. Her three roommates joined forces to criticize her. Eventually, Linda overcame her prejudice against Amy and embraced her.

2000: Fran (Sharon Stone) and Kal (Ellen DeGeneres) were a happy couple with only one regret - they didn't have children. They tried every possible method. First, they sought a man to provide sperm, but he wanted to be involved in the child's life; then they turned to sperm banks, but it took a long time without success. Finally, they sought help from a doctor and succeeded in artificial insemination.
