"Riyue Lingkong" uses its dramatic plot to outline a touching tale of an intergenerational friendship between Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty and Xie Yaohuan, a talented woman from the folk of Bashu. Different from purely historical storytelling, on the premise of respecting history, the show widely incorporates unofficial histories and legends to create a cast of characters including heroic women, literary figures, strange chivalrous knights, dancing girls and wizards. In addition to shooting in Xian, the production team also built nearly 30 large indoor sets with Tang style in Zhuozhou. There are also more than a thousand extravagant sets of Tang clothing, hundreds of unique Tang hairstyles and thousands of exquisitely made weapons and military uniforms from the Tang Dynasty. All these "prosperous Tang symbols", while outlining the details of life for officials and commoners during the prosperous Tang period, will also recreate the customs and folkways of the Tang Dynasty.
