The father of the main character, Gorou Honda, Shuji Honda, was originally a professional baseball player. He lost his mother when he was young, and when he was five, his father died from a brain hematoma after being hit in the head by a beanball from Joe Gibson during a game. Afterwards,吾郎's kindergarten teacher, Momoko Hoshino (Shuji's girlfriend) adopted吾郎. When he was nine, Hidekazu Shigeno (a classmate of his father and also a professional baseball player) married Momoko Hoshino, and Gorou Honda's last name was changed to Shigeno.
