May 15th, sources from the industry revealed yesterday that China Mobile might find it difficult to promote TD-SCDMA services across the country. Therefore, it might obtain two 3G licenses, one being a mobile service license using the TD-SCDMA standard and the other a service license using the European WCDMA standard. Francis Cheung, Head of Asia Telecom Research at CLSA, said in Shanghai while attending the 2008 CLSA China Forum: "I am not optimistic about the future development of the TD-SCDMA standard in China. The TD-SCDMA network has already been established in ten cities, but I cannot be sure if it can be promoted nationwide. Although TD-SCDMA has received government support, consumers will ultimately decide whether to purchase related services. Personally, I doubt whether many consumers would be interested in it."
