US scientists develop new type of bacteria that consumes sucrose and produces gasoline

Genetically modified E. coli (the short rod-shaped objects in the picture) are converting sucrose into gasoline (the oil bubbles in the picture).

With the development of biotechnology, biologists can "create" certain specific organisms that have never existed naturally before. Nowadays, scientists have even designed and created a unique strain of E. coli through genetic modification, which is capable of converting sucrose into petroleum fuel.
