In early April 1950, at the end of the Xichang Campaign, nearly 30,000 defeated Nationalist troops, including their families, scattered in all directions. Among them, ten thousand fled in nothing but their bare skin!

Due to the intervention of various Yi tribes still in the slave society, these defeated troops faced a desperate situation. The defeated Nationalist troops thought they could escape according to routine practices as in the inland areas; it would be relatively easier to avoid the PLA pursuing along the main roads after hiding in the deep mountains. However, they were not expecting that under the most primitive interception of rolling logs and falling stones by the Yi people, they first abandoned their guns, then surrendered other items, and were plundered completely. Fortunately, the impoverished Yi tribes only wanted a set of pants and clothes, just like hunting a wild animal for its fur to keep warm. Apart from this, they generally did not hurt the lives of the defeated troops.
