Sony SCEE president David Reeves told the media today that Sony's PS3 business is progressing rapidly in Europe, and by the end of this summer, the penetration rate of PS3 in the PAL region, mainly in Europe, is expected to surpass Microsoft's X360 for the first time.

In an interview with MCV, a publication under the UK-based business publishing group, Reeves shared his views on the current competition in the European TV gaming console market. He believes that this year, PS3 will be able to turn things around in Europe and other PAL regions.

"When it comes to hardware penetration in our major (PAL region) markets such as France, Spain, Germany, Italy, and smaller markets like New Zealand, the actual installed base of PS3 has already surpassed X360," Reeves told reporters. "The total volume of PS3 in Europe and PAL regions is expected to surpass the competitor by the end of this summer."

As evidence, Reeves revealed that in the past week, the cumulative sales of PS3 in the aforementioned regions were almost three times that of X360. Conversely, in North America, the sales of X360 have consistently led PS3, even during last year's Christmas holiday when PS3 sales saw significant growth, X360's lead did not waver at all.
