Scholars reveal: the symbolic meaning and dual gender of Nüwa (picture)

As to whether Nüwa is male or female, opinions vary and there is no consensus: most people determine that she is female according to the ancient myth that she was Fuxi's sister, or based on her name and the fact that she lived in a matrilineal society. Moreover, she is believed to be the mother of creation. However, some people speculate that she was male, or even without a gender, or half male and half female.
