In 1948, a Japanese law stipulated that January 15th every year was Coming of Age Day. In 2000, the government changed "Coming of Age Day" to the second Monday in January. Coming of Age Day marks the end of the time when young people are protected by their parents and the adults around them as children, and the beginning of their independence and entry into adult society. On this day, coming-of-age ceremonies are held all over the country. Women wear traditional kimonos, men wear traditional clothing or suits, and they receive blessings from the mayor.
