In the 7th year of Hongwu during the reign of Ming Taizu (1374 AD), the "Banknote Law" was issued. The following year, "Da Ming Tong Xing Bao Chao" was issued under the name of the Secretariat (which was renamed to the Ministry of Household in the 13th year). The denominations included 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 coins, and 1 guan. One guan equaled 1000 copper coins or one liang of silver, or two qian and five fen of gold; four guan equaled one liang of gold. It was made from mulberry bark and discarded official documents.
