The "Valley of Giant Vegetables" and its enormous radishes

In the Matanuska Valley, northeast of Anchorage, Alaska, USA, and on Sakhalin Island (formerly part of the Soviet Union and near the Pacific Ocean), there are two magical places. The vegetables grown there are extraordinarily large: potatoes as big as basketballs, white radishes weighing over 20 kilograms each, red carrots 20 centimeters in diameter and about 35 centimeters long, a single head of cabbage weighing up to 30 kilograms, peas and soybeans growing up to 2 meters tall, and pasture grass so tall it can reach above the heads of horse riders. These areas have thus been nicknamed the "Valley of Giant Vegetables."
