The video of postdoctoral researcher Sun Aiwu selling goods at a roadside stall
Sun Aiwu, male, graduated from the undergraduate program at Nankai University. In 1998, he went to the United States for further study and received his doctorate from Stony Brook University, part of the State University of New York. He did his post-doctoral research at the University of Michigan and published an article in the world-class academic journal *Science*. However, after returning to China, he "couldn't find" a job. Starting in August 2009, he was "forced" to sell goods at a farmers' market, subsisting on boiled potatoes and sweet potatoes every day and living on the street for months.
Many of the vendors at the market felt sorry for Sun Aiwu and often gave him some dry food or fruit, but he would always throw it into the trash can immediately after receiving it or simply refuse it outright. Relatives invited him to stay with them, but he also refused. A reporter once asked him if he would be willing to work as a translator, and he replied that it wasn't something he should do.
