The Art of Knowing People by Observing Their Eyes
Both the shape and the expression of the eyes must be taken into account to make an accurate judgment. The eyes should be clearly defined in black and white. One should avoid having lifeless eyes, indistinct black and white, red eyes with yellow sclera, or eyes that show all whites. The ancient famous physiognomist Yuan Tiangang's correct methods are quite valuable for reference:
1. Drunken eyes: (dazed as if drunk) - those who squander money on wine and women.
2. Sleepy eyes: (dull as if asleep) - those who are poor, lowly, and lonely.
3. Startled eyes: (timid as if startled) - those who are cowardly and lack decisiveness.
4. Sickly eyes: (weary as if ill) - those who suffer from illness and decline.
5. Lustful eyes: (eyes wandering lasciviously) - those who are wicked, lustful, and thievish.
These are all methods of knowing people through their gaze. The gaze is a "dynamic" manifestation of a person. Therefore, when we encounter someone with a weak gaze, we can infer that they lack decisiveness; someone with bright eyes is certainly intelligent and talented; someone who glances furtively, sidelong, or askance is surely deceitful, lewd, and greedy; someone whose gaze looks upward is naturally proud and disdainful of others; someone who looks downward, or speaks without meeting another's gaze, is a cunning, suspicious, and treacherous person (but those who look down out of shyness are merely insecure or overly reserved, perhaps lacking self-confidence or having something on their mind, so this should not be confused); someone with an unfocused gaze, looking around wildly, is certainly crafty, sneaky, and deceptive; someone with a floating gaze is greedy for sex; someone with red veins in their eyes belongs to the stubborn group, and may also be a wicked individual; someone with eyes that seem to smile, both upper and lower eyelids arched, and a gaze like water melting, called peach blossom eyes, men and women with such eyes are certainly promiscuous.
People with round and large eyes indicate broad comprehension and interest in various things. Large eyes indicate activity, agility, and rich emotions. People with round and large eyes are likable, easily trusting of others, and thus easily deceived.
People with small eyes work cautiously, slowly, cleverly, and rationally. However, those who are too small are foolish.
People with long and slender eyes are smart and have a sense of humor. When they laugh, their eyes become slits, known as smiling eyes. Such people are amiable, popular, and optimistic about their career prospects. People with protruding eyes are strong-willed, deceitful, and cruel. People with sunken eyes are obstinate, thoughtful, and suspicious.
People with triangular eyes, beware of these people being evil, solitary, and unfeeling, and their thievery is hard to guard against. Ancient physiognomy books say: "A woman with triangular eyes kills her own husband," which should not be ignored.
Ancients once categorized eye shapes in an "animalistic" manner, commonly seen are:
1. Phoenix eyes: long and elegant, clearly defined black and white, the most beautiful eyes in the world. People with such eyes are wise, emotional, and possess great artistic talent.
2. Dragon eyes: loyal and trustworthy.
3. Tiger eyes: eyes like a tiger's vigilance, dignified and untouchable, material for a great general.
4. Eyes slightly curved and long, optimistic, amiable, and long-lived.
5. Crane eyes: transcendent and extraordinary, noble and clean.
6. Deer eyes: lazy, full of emotion, righteous, and a true friend.
7. Horse eyes: mediocre, lacking ambition, but loyal and straightforward.
8. Monkey eyes: deep scheming, suspicious, lustful, cunning, deceitful, and greedy.
9. Fish eyes: stupid, clumsy, and short-lived.
10. Sheep eyes: showing all whites, like a dead man's eyes, such people are deceitful, malicious, solitary, and cruel, and will not end well.
11. Rat eyes: small and triangular, sharp eyes, eyeballs moving restlessly left and right, thieves.
12. Chicken eyes: quick-tempered and venomous, lustful and thievish.
13. Snake eyes: fine and round, black pupils greenish, people with such eyes are cruel, merciless, and highly deceitful.
14. Bee eyes: isolated, venomous, and reckless.
15. Wolf eyes: venomous and cold-blooded.
In summary, upright eyes reflect an upright heart; crooked eyes reflect a crooked heart; kind eyes reflect a kind heart; evil eyes reflect an evil heart. If you encounter someone with triangular eyes, or monkey, sheep, rat, chicken, snake, bee, or wolf eyes, with protruding eyeballs, unfocused gaze, looking around sneakily, sidelong, or askance, they are certainly not good people. It is advisable to be cautious when dealing with such individuals.
