The secular name of Wong Tai Sin was Wong Cho Ping. He was a native of Dan Xi during the Jin Dynasty. As a child, his family was poor. At the age of eight, he herded sheep for others. At fifteen, he encountered a celestial being on Chi Song Mountain in his hometown of Jinhua, and entered a blessed land to cultivate and refine himself, eventually attaining enlightenment. Because he resided on Chi Song Mountain, he was called Chi Song Wong Tai Sin.

In 1915, the Taoist practitioners Leung Yan Yim and his son Leung Kun Chuen respectfully invited Master Wong Tai Sin from the Pu Guang ancestral altar at Mount Xicai to Hong Kong. He was originally worshipped in Wan Chai. In 1921, Wong Tai Sin revealed through a spirit-writing session that they should go to the auspicious site of Bamboo Garden to build the "Sik Sik Yuen," which continues to this day.
