The establishment of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer can be traced back to the year 1987. On September 16th, 1987, at Montreal, Canada, during an international conference convened by UNEP on the protection of the ozone layer, the Montreal Protocol was passed. For the first time specific standards for global ozone emissions were set forth and this conference played a historic role in global environmental protection.
