"Zhongyuan Festival", referred to as "Ghost Festival" by the people of Guidong, is commonly known as "Half of July" (in some areas it is on the 13th or 14th). In the customs of Guidong, "Half of July" is another important time for sacrifices after the Qingming Festival. The biggest difference is that during Qingming Festival, clans often gather together to worship their ancestors, while during "Half of July", most families conduct private sacrifices. By evening, every household burns incense at their own doorstep, sticking the incense into the ground, the more the better, symbolizing a bountiful harvest. This is called "spreading fields". Some places have the activity of releasing water lanterns. A water lantern is a lamp tied onto a small wooden board, mostly made with colorful paper in the shape of a lotus, called "water drought lamp". People believe that since Zhongyuan Festival is the Ghost Festival, there should also be lanterns lit to celebrate the festival for ghosts. However, traditionally, humans and ghosts are different; humans represent yang, ghosts represent yin; land represents yang, water represents yin. Therefore, during the Upper Yuan Festival, lanterns are lit on land, while during the Middle Yuan Festival, lanterns are lit in the water.
