Jin Yong, originally named Zha Liangyong, was born in 1924 in Haining, Zhejiang Province, from a prominent family. For hundreds of years, the Zha family has produced many notable figures, leading trends and fashions. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty referred to them as "a great family since the Tang and Song Dynasties, one of the few distinguished families in Jiangnan."
He majored in English and international law in university. He devoted his life to journalism, having worked as a reporter, translator, and editor for the Shanghai Ta Kung Pao and Hong Kong Ta Kung Pao and Xinwan Pao newspapers. In 1959, he founded the Ming Pao in Hong Kong and served as its chief editor and publisher for 35 years. During this period, he also founded Ming Pao Monthly, Ming Pao Weekly, Singapore's New Ming Daily, and Malaysia's New Ming Daily. In 1972, Jin Yong retired from writing, putting down his pen forever.
