Bennd came from a small town in northern Germany called Reineck. He was transferred to work in Beijing around 2002 and then went to Shanghai. One day, he saw someone sleeping soundly on the pavement outside a shopping street in Shanghai. This puzzled him because such phenomenon was rarely seen in the West. Since then, he began to pay attention to Chinese people who slept in public places. He believed that now the whole world is talking about "the awakening of the Chinese dragon" and how rapidly China develops. The world has even started to feel panic about the speed of China's rise. He hoped that through his discovery of "Chinese people sleeping", which goes against the mainstream, the world would see the peacefulness of the Chinese people, and that they are more flexible and adaptable than the Westerners.
