Plot introduction of "Gazing at God":
Janie lost her parents at a young age and lived a poor but happy life with her grandmother. As Janie blossomed into womanhood, she yearned for a blissful love, like a pear tree in full bloom. However, her grandmother hoped to change her granddaughter's fate through marriage, and Janie was forced to marry Logan, a middle-aged black man with sixty acres of farmland. After marriage, all Janie could do every day was the dirty and exhausting farm work, losing all contact with the outside world. By chance, Janie met a young black man named Joe, and she left home to follow Joe to a newly developing black town to start a new life.
Joe was a natural leader, and under his guidance, everyone worked hard to build the new town, which quickly took on a brand-new look. Janie was proud of her husband and life; she became the most respected mayor's wife as she had wished, finally achieving the life she had long desired. However, good times didn't last long, and soon Janie discovered that Joe restricted her freedom everywhere, treating her merely as a pet to be kept and admired. Due to issues of freedom and respect, Janie and Joe had serious disagreements and began a prolonged period of living apart. Janie knew Joe loved her deeply, but she didn't want to sit idly on an empty high chair doing nothing.

After Joe's death, unable to bear the loneliness, Janie followed Sweet Tea, a carefree and imaginative young black man who lacked money and status, to Florida to work as seasonal laborers. Despite the significant age difference, Janie found renewed vitality in him. None of their friends were optimistic about their romance, and Janie faced disdain and mockery from others in the town. In another city, they enjoyed the joy of working together and the rich and vivid poetic and dance traditions among the black seasonal workers, living happily.
However, during a sudden flood, Sweet Tea was bitten by a mad dog while saving Janie and contracted rabies. During this time, Janie stayed by Sweet Tea’s side without fail, but his condition worsened day by day, causing immense pain to Janie. In his delirium...
