Synopsis:

This film is adapted from the eponymous novel by American novelist Dennis Lehane. In 1954, Federal Marshal Teddy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) arrive by boat at the Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island, near Boston, to investigate a mysterious disappearance. Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer), a woman who brutally murdered her own children, has inexplicably escaped from her heavily guarded cell and is hiding somewhere on the isolated island. Teddy suspects that the hospital's chief psychiatrist, Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), is withholding crucial information. He confides in Chuck that his true purpose for coming to the island is to find the administrator who years ago set fire to his wife Dolores's (Michelle Williams) death and to expose the U.S. government's use of mental patients for inhumane scientific experiments. However, as the investigation progresses, the truth becomes increasingly elusive...
