Synopsis:

A biography of Ian Dury who was stricken with polio at a young age and defied expectations by becoming one of the founders of the punk-rock scene in Britain in the 1970s.

Ian Dury, the British singer known for his humorous punk rock songs such as "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick," passed away from cancer in 2000 at the age of 57.

Dury suffered from partial paralysis due to polio as a child but, through relentless effort, released his debut album "New Boots and Panties" in 1977 at the age of 35. He and his band The Blockheads received great acclaim, with the album staying on the UK charts for an entire year.

Dury's famous tracks include "Clever Trevor" and "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll." His creative musical style influenced various bands and music genres, including Madness and Blur's pop-punk.

Singer Suggs McPherson of Madness praised Dury as "a rock artist but more importantly a poet," stating that he opened up new possibilities for other rock singers, providing all the potentialities of rock.

Dury also worked as an actor, screenwriter, and TV host. Last year, he returned to the music stage and released the album "Mr. Love Pants," marking his first collaboration with The Blockheads in nearly two decades. His familiar face reappeared on British television this year when he did an advertisement for The Times.

Dury's cancer had spread to his liver, deteriorating his health, but he refused to succumb to the illness. "I don't waste time punching the moon," he told BBC Radio last year while reflecting on his musical career. "It doesn't make me feel any better, I'm sure. Besides, half of life is spent fighting yourself."

Dury was born on May 12, 1942, in Upminster, East London. At the age of 28, he decided to pursue an artistic career, teaching art before starting his music career by performing in bars and clubs around London.

Today, he leaves behind his wife Sophie and their two young sons, Albert and Billy, as well as two children from his previous marriage to Betty (who also died from cancer).

"I don't care if people forget about me right away," Dury told the BBC. "I'm not here to be remembered. I'm here to live."
