Introduction:
This film is adapted from the essay collection "The Funny Antarctic Chef" written by Jun Nishimura based on his personal experiences as a chef for the Japanese Antarctic Observation Team. Originally a sailor-chef, Jun Nishimura (played by Masaharu Fukuyama) was sent to the Dome Fuji Base in the icy and snowy Antarctic to serve as a chef for seven research team members. His wife (played by Naomi Nishida) had to raise their 8-year-old daughter and newborn son alone. In the freezing cold of Antarctica, eating became the greatest pleasure in the monotonous lives of the seven team members — glaciology assistant Taishi Kawamura (played by Kengo Kora), meteorologist Masahiko Hirabayashi (played by Masahiro Kobayashi), communications officer Ryo Nishihira (played by Daisuke Kuroda), doctor Masashi Fukuda (played by Isao Sasaki), meteorologist and team leader Hiroshi Kaneda (played by Yasuhiro Furukawa), pilot Takeshi Mikoshika (played by Hiroshi Kumazawa), and glaciologist Hideyuki Honoyama (played by Katsuma Ise). Nishimura used every method possible to cook a variety of delicious meals, and around the theme of food, these eight lonely men performed countless amusing life stories that couldn't help but make people laugh. This film won the Best Actor Award at the Yokohama Film Festival in Japan (Masaharu Fukuyama).
