Synopsis:

Sergeant Will Montgomery (Ben Foster) has just returned to the U.S., injured, after completing his tour of duty in Iraq. Even though he spends a pleasant day with his girlfriend, Kelly (Jena Malone), after being discharged from the hospital, they eventually break up. With his service term not yet completed, Will is reassigned to the "Casualty Notification" service unit under Captain Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson). In the process of carrying out their notification duties, Will and Tony encounter various situations, including being physically assaulted and verbally abused by grieving family members. While delivering the news of her husband's death to Olivia Peterson (Samantha Morton), Will worries that beneath Olivia’s strong exterior lies an inability to cope with the loss, leaving her vulnerable as both a widow and a single mother. Afterwards, Will helps and supports her and her child on multiple occasions, leading to mutual affection between them. However, Tony disapproves of Will’s repeated violations of the "Casualty Notification Conduct Guidelines." After a conflict, both finally express the deep pain they've been suppressing for a long time.

The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson) and Best Original Screenplay, received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson), won the Peace Film Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay, and was also nominated for the Golden Bear for Best Picture.
