Synopsis:
An early masterpiece by Leonardo DiCaprio.
Jim, Mickey, Pedro, Newchuan, and Bobby are classmates at a Catholic high school in New York. All five of them are on the basketball team, bringing glory to their school and becoming close friends. Occasionally, Jim and his friends experiment with drugs, confident that they won't get addicted. They all have high hopes for the future. However, Bobby passes away from leukemia, deeply affecting Jim, who begins to sink into drug addiction as a way to seek solace. In contrast, Newchuan refuses drugs and remains focused on his studies. Jim, Mickey, and Pedro form a group, indulging in drugs and roaming the streets. Eventually, they are expelled from school. When Jim's mother discovers his drug use, she becomes furious, leading to a conflict between them. Jim angrily runs away from home.
Together with Mickey and Pedro, Jim wanders the streets, committing thefts and robberies just to support their drug habits. During one robbery attempt at a restaurant, Pedro is caught by the police. Desperate for money, Jim even resorts to selling his body. His addiction spirals out of control, putting him on the brink of life and death. Meanwhile, Newchuan is selected as a star player for the high school basketball team. Later, Mickey and Jim accidentally kill a drug dealer. Mickey is captured, and Jim returns home asking his mother for money. Despite her reluctance, she eventually calls the police, leading to Jim's imprisonment. After enduring painful withdrawal, Jim successfully overcomes his addiction and vows never to touch drugs again. With his exceptional writing talent, Jim reflects on his past diaries, feeling immense regret for his actions. After being released from prison, he writes "The Basketball Diaries," which is published as a book. He now works in the arts and entertainment industry and has stayed away from drugs.
Due to scenes involving a school shooting in the film, it was believed to have directly influenced a later real-life school shooting incident in the United States, drawing significant attention.
