Synopsis:

On the night of June 21, 1791, King Louis XVI and his family fled the palace in Paris by carriage, heading towards the border. Among the passengers were Tom, who had witnessed the American Revolution and defended the principles of the people, Pain; a female singer seemingly taking advantage of the chaos; a countess praising despotism; an official particularly concerned about the fate of those around him; a young Jacobin student on the roof of the carriage; and the countess's adorable maid. The king failed to reach the border and was surrounded by local residents in the bustling small town of Varennes. At that moment, the king was hiding in the home of a grocery store owner. The crowded crowd shouted, and no one could see the king or the royal family members. The crowd in the square sang revolutionary hymns in waves. The people rejoiced because the revolutionaries had captured the king and brought him back to the capital. In January 1793, the king was beheaded.

Behind-the-Scenes Production:

This film combines the styles of thrillers, detective films, westerns, and period comedies, making it captivating. The title signifies the world that is about to be born. The entire film has a melancholic and sensitive tone, and the director takes a lenient attitude towards those who have been overthrown due to the collapse of the old regime. The narrative lens is rich, with two scenes being particularly evocative: one where Hanna Schygulla bows her head on the king's sleeve, and another where Louis XVI and Queen Antonietta can only see their feet. The film is filled with satire, occasionally presenting nuanced emotional descriptions. The cinematographer captures beautiful landscapes, giving the entire film an elegant and serene charm. This story reminds us that, amidst turmoil and counter-revolution, people continue to seek justice and peace, holding onto hope for peace. This film participated in the competition at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival.
