Synopsis:

In the 4th century AD, as the Roman Empire began to decline, in the city of Alexandria, the polytheistic scholar Hypatia (Rachel Weisz) gave lectures to her students. Orestes (Oscar Isaac) secretly admired her and even boldly confessed his feelings in the library; the slave Davus (Max Minghella) also had feelings for her but was restrained by his lowly status. Meanwhile, the Christian's preaching of freedom made Davus waver in his beliefs, leading him to be whipped as punishment. It was Hypatia who healed his wounds and comforted his soul. As the political situation became turbulent, Christians launched an attack on the polytheists. The two sides confronted each other in the Library of Alexandria. Later, they received orders from the Roman ruler that the polytheists must vacate the library and allow the Christians to enter, thus beginning a cruel catastrophe...

This film was screened out of competition at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. Filming locations included Fort Ricasoli in Malta, which was also used for "Gladiator" and "Troy." Hypatia was originally intended to be played by Nicole Kidman, but due to her portrayal of a villain in "The Golden Compass," she faced disapproval from Christian groups, leading to a change in casting.
