Plot: Millennium magazine publisher and financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist is ordered to pay a hefty compensation after being convicted of defaming entrepreneur Wennerström. Not long after the incident, Blomkvist, his reputation in tatters and forced to resign, receives an invitation from Henrik Vanger, the patriarch of the Vanger Corporation, requesting him to travel to Hedestad Island to write the Vanger family history. Vanger also offers a high salary and evidence detrimental to Wennerström in an attempt to entice Blomkvist's agreement.

Blomkvist soon realizes that things are not as simple as they seem. Writing the family history turns out to be just a pretense; Henrik's actual goal is for Blomkvist to delve into the nearly forty-year-old disappearance case of Harriet, a member of the Vanger family. During the investigation, Blomkvist continuously encounters obstacles, but upon discovering that Vanger had hired a skilled hacker specializing in online investigations, Lisbeth Salander, to look into his background, Blomkvist decides to collaborate with this mysterious yet intelligent girl to unravel the lies and secrets behind this murder case...
