Introduction to Step Up 2: The Streets

This movie is the sequel to the 2006 blockbuster hit "Step Up". Although it's a sequel, there is almost no connection in terms of plot with the previous movie. All characters have been completely refreshed; the only element retained from the first film is the setting - the Maryland School of Art.

The rebellious dancer Andy (played by Briana Evigan) is a member of Baltimore's most renowned dance troupe, "410." She gets the opportunity to further her studies at the Maryland School of Art, but after arriving, she finds it hard to integrate into school life. At the same time, she gradually drifts apart from her friends in "410." Determined not to sink into mediocrity, Andy decides to prove herself through her talent. She gathers a group of students from her class, including Chase (played by Robert Hoffman), one of the hottest dancers in school. Together, they form a dance troupe and set out on a journey after learning about an underground street dance competition in Baltimore called "The Streets." Their opponents turn out to be "410." Through fierce competition, Andy finally rediscovers her dream and wins back her place in both worlds.

Behind-the-scenes of Step Up 2: The Streets

The biggest selling point of this movie is undoubtedly its fiery music and dance performances. To ensure the quality of the dances, the production team specially invited three top choreographers: Jamal Sims, Hi-Hat, and Dave Scott. Each of these three choreographers could independently handle an entire film project. For example, Jamal Sims has notable works such as "Vanilla Sky," "Garfield" (surprisingly, Garfield's cool dance moves were choreographed by him), "After the Sunset," and "Beauty Shop." Moreover, the first part of "Step Up" relied on Jamal Sims' choreography to maintain its appeal amidst widespread criticism, capturing a box office revenue of $100 million. Additionally, last year's successful musical "Stomp the Yard" was also one of his masterpieces. Hi-Hat's real name is Nadine, but she dislikes being addressed by her given name. As a dancer, she is bold and exceptionally skilled, much like the protagonist Andy in the movie. Her choreographic works for movies like "Stick It" and "How She Move" have received good reviews. Dave Scott gained fame last year through "Stomp the Yard" and was subsequently hired as a choreographer for five films this year ("Wieners," "Prom Night," "Made of Honor," "Burning Sands").

With strong support from the production team, the front-stage actors must also deliver impressive performances. Both lead actors, Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman, are already accomplished dancers. They underwent specialized training for this movie under professional instructors. Robert Hoffman even ventured into the real-life underground street dance battles in Baltimore to compete against street dancers.

Although Briana Evigan may not be well-known in the movie world, her appearance in Linkin Park's hit MTV single "Numb" brought her greater recognition. She is also one of the founders of the all-girl rock band Moorish Idol. However, this marks her first time taking on the leading role in a film. This movie will reveal whether she has the potential to succeed in multiple fields.

Another noteworthy figure is Aaron Zigman, who composed the original music for this movie. Aaron Zigman entered the field of film music only five years ago, yet he has already composed original scores for 30 films, which is quite impressive. Among these, two films' soundtracks ("John Q," "The Notebook") won the BMI Film Music Award. His music often seamlessly integrates with the movie plots, enhancing the overall cinematic experience.
