Synopsis of No Country for Old Men

The story takes place in 1980 in West Texas, along the U.S.-Mexico border at the Rio Grande. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), a Vietnam War veteran down on his luck, stumbles across several dead bodies and a stash of heroin worth $2 million during a hunting trip — clearly the result of a drug cartel shootout. Llewelyn takes the money home to his wife Carla Jean (Kelly Macdonald). That night, after saying goodbye to his wife, he returns to the scene, only to find that things don't go as smoothly this time, leading him into serious trouble. A ruthless hitman named Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), old Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), and Mexican drug lords are all now after him...

The film reveals how "with the passage of time, the harmonious society under legal control has changed beyond recognition, replaced by rampant international drug trafficking and unchecked violence. In the blink of an eye, it feels like another world. The society we see today is no longer suitable for those who lived in the old days; stability and rule of law have become things of the past."

Sheriff Ed Tom Bell represents the "Old Men" in the title. Once they were enforcers maintaining social order, but now they feel powerless and ineffective, amazed at the changes in society, the decline of humanity and legal consciousness, while lamenting that the world has gone beyond their control, yearning for the fairness and warmth of human nature that once existed.

Since their debut nearly thirty years ago, the Coen Brothers have always been regarded as prodigies in the American art film scene. An Oscar (Best Screenplay for Fargo), three Cannes Film Festival Best Director Awards (for Barton Fink, Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?), and countless other festival accolades have undoubtedly placed these individualistic brothers on a pedestal. However, just as everyone's expectations were high, waiting for their next masterpiece, the Coen Brothers stumbled with The Hudsucker Proxy and The Ladykillers, and then spent three years without releasing any new work. Amidst much anticipation, the Coen Brothers made a double comeback this year with two new films: No Country for Old Men and Burn After Reading. Judging from their calm and determined approach, it's clear they're out to redeem themselves.

In recent years, familiar faces from the Coen Brothers' usual ensemble — such as John Turturro and John Goodman — have been gradually sidelined. The brothers seem to have developed a preference for working with big-name stars, collaborating successfully with George Clooney (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Hudsucker Proxy) and recruiting the highly bankable Tom Hanks (The Ladykillers). Since their long-time collaborator Clooney has been assigned to their next project Burn After Reading, the Coen Brothers have chosen a refreshingly new cast for No Country for Old Men —

Given that the film's story is set in Texas, Tommy Lee Jones and Woody Harrelson, both native Texans, naturally caught the brothers' attention. Jones' self-directed and starred Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada a couple of years ago had sparked a resurgence of interest in Westerns. As for Harrelson, whose career has been middling lately, many still remember his ferocious role in Natural Born Killers from a decade ago. These traits evidently align well with the tone of No Country for Old Men. As for Javier Bardem from Spain, he is undoubtedly an excellent choice to portray a violent Latin gangster from the U.S.-Mexico border. After starring in several acclaimed art films like The Spirit of the Beehive, Bardem's muscular tough-guy side is ripe for release.
