Introduction:
During the Liberation War, Company Commander Lao Gu received an order from the regiment commander to lead his soldiers quickly to the position to complete a blocking task so that the main force could safely transfer. They agreed that when Company One heard the assembly call, they could break through and withdraw. But the entire company of soldiers never heard the sound of the assembly call. Except for Lao Gu who was saved by a local villager, all the other soldiers died in battle. Since then, finding the regiment commander and asking why the assembly call wasn't sounded has become Lao Gu's lifelong pursuit. Decades later, he learned that the regiment commander had already sacrificed himself on the battlefield in Korea. The commander's guard revealed the secret: when the main force transferred, the commander didn't let the bugler sound the call at all. It had been decided to sacrifice Company One to ensure the safe transfer of the main force. Until his last moment, the commander still felt guilty and repentant about his decision. Lao Gu eventually forgave the commander. In "Assembly," the leading man Zhang Hanwu and the tough male image of "Gu Zidi" he created in the film have become the focus of attention from all sectors. Nowadays, with the prevalence of pretty boys and effeminate styles, the market needs a strong male image that can stand alone, and Zhang Hanwu is a typical representative of this type.
In "Assembly," the absolute protagonist is actually only Zhang Hanwu. The role of "political instructor" played by Ren Quan lasts only about 20 minutes, and he dies in the first battle. But this seemingly simple "death" took Ren Quan four hours to "die." "In the first battle scene, one of my legs was blown off. The lens needed to bury one of my legs in the soil to create the scene of a severed limb, and I was buried for four hours. The temperature at the time was more than 20 degrees below zero Celsius."
To make Ren Quan's scene of being blown up more realistic, Director Feng specially hired experts and spent over 100,000 yuan to custom-make a silicone dummy for him. "When I saw this dummy, I was dumbfounded—it was too terrifying, almost exactly like me." Because it looked too much like him, Ren Quan couldn't bear it sometimes, "Seeing it finally processed into a bloody mess lying on the ground, it really felt like it was myself."
Feng Xiaogang claims that "Assembly" is a men's play, without romantic sentiments. Although cold humor has always been a feature of his films, he won't be humorous just for the sake of humor in "Assembly."
This film is adapted from Yang Jinyuan's novel "The Lawsuit." The story background takes place between 1948 and 1956, where all the soldiers of a company were killed in action but no one knew. The entire film showcases the bravery and touching stories of these few soldiers through the process of searching and tracing.
