【Original Title】Ghost World. The edge of life is like a long spring, holding hands does not necessarily mean being intimate lovers. Everything is unsaid. It generally happens between poor boys and courtesans. A poor boy falls in love with a good woman who appears bright but has a sad heart, virtuous but forced into prostitution. So he struggles against the madam, society, and family. In the end, two simple and honest good people are either separated and commit double suicide for love, or live an ordinary but happy life.

【Synopsis】

Sometimes without any major events happening, life can still seem very different. Enid and Rebecca are very good friends, the kind who feel especially comfortable and at ease together. These two have different personalities, but they can find what they lack in each other; if anything, both of them are somewhat on the edge, somewhat out of place with their surroundings, having strange ideas, only Rebecca is relatively more normal. Together, they comment on the things and people around them, often with a touch of cynicism, not thinking the world is all that great. These two actually suit each other quite well. But high school graduation has come, and things have changed. Rebecca has found a job and started saving money for the apartment they had planned to share. But Enid might possibly move to another place to study. This period after high school graduation feels different from before, meeting some strange people, experiencing some unexpected things. Before entering real life, what do these two girls find in life?

This movie is adapted from a comic book. The director prefers to call it a graphic novel. The title "Ghost World" is a bit strange because there are no ghosts or zombies in the movie. It refers exactly to the time between high school graduation and the start of adult life, a strange blank period where one doesn't know what to do with it. Just that in the eyes of these two girls, the real world might be stranger than the ghost world.

Unlike some truly bizarre comic books, "Ghost World" tells about real life and very real people. The comic book author, one of the screenwriters of this film, Daniel Clowes, in the director's view, is somewhat cynical and pessimistic, but not absolutely so, which is why they can create this absurd comedy from everyday tragedies. Zwigoff became famous through his documentary "Kramers," which just happens to tell the life story of a comic artist. This movie won the Grand Jury Prize for documentaries at Sundance in 1995 and received several best documentary awards that year. After that, he didn't intend to have anything to do with comics anymore. But things don't always go as planned. Coincidentally, his wife saw "Ghost World" and became very interested, urging him to contact Clowes. Thus, their collaboration began. Interestingly, Clowes happened to be one of the three comic artists Zwigoff admired. He said, "There are some parts of 'Ghost World' that I really identify with, and some I can see in myself."
