Two bandits and one woman changed his life, contributing to his success but also leading to his ultimate destruction. These two bandits were his sworn brothers who had once vowed to share life and death together: Second Brother (played by Andy Lau) and Third Brother (played by Takeshi Kaneshiro). And that woman was Second Brother's wife, Liansheng (played by Xu Jinglei).

Second Brother, a straightforward and impulsive man, was a forthright hero who became a bandit in turbulent times. Leading hundreds of men in raids across the land, he followed a code even as a thief - "take seven, leave three" - providing a lifeline to the villagers who were robbed. The spoils of these raids were distributed to the good people who lived in the same mountain village as him, earning him much respect and loyalty.
