During the Spring and Autumn Period, Jin Linggong disliked the powerful minister Tu'an Jia (played by Wang Xueqi) for his dominance in court affairs, and was also weary of Prime Minister Zhao Dun's (played by Bao Guoan) autocratic style. Zhao Dun’s son Zhao She (played by Zhao Wenzhuo) had two reasons to celebrate— not only did he achieve remarkable military success, but his wife Zhuang Ji (played by Fan Bingbing) was also pregnant. Tu'an Jia saw this as a grave threat and devised a plan to poison the court, using the emperor's authority to exterminate the Zhao family, sentencing them all to death.
When Zhuang Ji was seeing Doctor Cheng Ying (played by Ge You) for her pulse diagnosis, she witnessed her husband Zhao She's death. In her grief, she resolved to give birth to their child. At this critical moment, Han Jue (played by Huang Xiaoming), under orders from Tu'an Jia, came to eliminate the lineage. In desperation, Zhuang Ji entrusted the infant to Cheng Ying, asking him to deliver it to Gongsun Chujiu (played by Zhang Fengyi). Afterward, she committed suicide by sword. Han Jue was injured by Tu'an Jia, who then ordered the city to be sealed off and every household searched for the infant. In a panic, Cheng Ying's wife (played by Hai Qing) handed over the orphan, Zhao Wu. Cheng Ying went to retrieve the orphan while his wife went to meet Gongsun Chujiu. Due to the sealed-off city, Cheng Ying hid his wife and child behind a wall. Tu'an Jia used a stratagem of feigning injury to force Cheng Ying to reveal the baby's location, subsequently executing Gongsun Chujiu and Cheng Ying's family. Cheng Ying endured his pain and decided to raise Zhao Wu alone. While seeking medical treatment, Han Jue learned the truth and formed a life-and-death alliance with Cheng Ying. Cheng Ying took Zhao Wu and sought refuge under Tu'an Jia, even allowing Tu'an Jia to adopt Zhao Wu as his godson. Thus began a 15-year-long plan for revenge...
