The dangerous and passionate love story of four men and women bound by the painting "Beauty Portrait" by Shin Yun-Bok...
About 250 years ago, there was a woman who changed her fate for the sake of painting. This is none other than the famous cross-dressing天才 painter in Korean history, Shin Yun-Bok (played by Kim Min-Sun). To investigate the truth behind her father's wrongful death, Shin Yun-Bok conceals her female identity, dresses as a man, and studies painting under the renowned local painter Kim Hong-Do (played by Kim Young-Ho), making a living by selling paintings to landlords. One day, she meets merchant Kang Wu (played by Kim Nam-Gil) who makes bronze mirrors at the market. Soon, her true identity is discovered by him, and they develop a sweet romance. Famous courtesan Snowflake (played by秋瓷炫) deeply loves Kim Hong-Do, but alas, Kim Hong-Do is only infatuated with his disciple Yun-Bok. Where will these four individuals end up? Can Shin Yun-Bok and Kang Wu protect their love?
[Reviews]:
It's evident that the Koreans attempted to use this movie to elevate Korean erotic culture and traditional art to another peak following "The King and the Clown." Just from the visual texture and costumes/decorations, one can tell a lot of money was poured into this film. As an erotic movie, it’s interesting but not worth encouraging. After all, the overall quality of the work doesn't match the investment. Those who had high expectations beforehand might be disappointed. Let's not even compare this work with the artistic depth of Kim Ki-Duk's series; even when compared with some well-known low-budget Korean erotic films, its entertainment value is questionable. Some so-called erotic elements make me suspect that the screenwriter added them just for the sake of being erotic, which contributes nothing to the development of the plot. Why bother?
If compared with the boring movie "Scandal" starring Uncle Bae from a few years ago, this one has many advantages. At least, the actors are a bit more appealing. The biggest highlight is probably the scenery - the visuals are quite stunning.
If you want to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Korea, then watch this movie.
