"The Pacific" only has 10 episodes. It took seven years to prepare and shoot, with an investment of $223 million, making it the most expensive miniseries in history. Tom Hanks, Spielberg, and Gary Gozeman jointly served as producers. This is also Hanks and Spielberg's first joint production of a TV series after "Band of Brothers."

"The Pacific" is adapted from the books "Helmet for My Pillow" and "With the Old Breed," as well as some interviews. It tells the stories of three American Marine soldiers on the Pacific battlefield from three different perspectives. Spielberg suggested using a "hand-to-hand relay" narrative style, passing from one character to the next, with no intersections between them, like three different movies. After the three scripts were completed, Tom Hanks insisted on shooting it as a 10-episode series.
