Plot Introduction:

"The Masked Thief" tells the story of 1949, when renowned detective played by Toru Nakamura is about to marry Takako Tokiwa, a major theft case occurs. After investigation by Nakamura, it was found that the handsome circus magician played by Takeshi Kaneshiro has significant suspicion. He is thus mistakenly regarded as the legendary thief, bearing the injustice, but Takeshi Kaneshiro did not give up. He attempts to clear his name through his own efforts. Throughout this process, he will face various unexpected difficulties...

This is a tale of a chivalrous thief set in the 19th century, in a fictional Japanese city named Teito, where the brutal Second World War never happened. The noble system of the Meiji period still continues during this time. In this prosperous city, the huge wealth gap has caused the mysterious shadow thief who robs the rich and nobles — known as the strange man "Twenty Faces" (K-20) — to run rampant in the city, with highly skilled stealing techniques. He can easily break into various heavily guarded treasure vaults to steal valuables, and possesses the mysterious skill of instant face-changing. His identity remains a mystery, and he even writes letters before committing crimes to warn the owners, announcing the time he will strike, yet still manages to succeed effortlessly.

Young circus member Endo Heikichi (played by Takeshi Kaneshiro), is a bold and skilled young man. He is invited by a mysterious gentleman to infiltrate the engagement ceremony of the wealthy heiress Hachiba Yoko (played by Takako Tokiwa) and the famous detective Mishi Gogoro (played by Toru Nakamura). However, he never expected that he has fallen into the trap set by the strange man Twenty Faces, being mistaken for the strange man Twenty Faces himself. To clear his name, Endo Heikichi decides to use his intelligence and the disguise magic tricks and agile skills learned from the circus, to personally catch the strange man Twenty Faces to prove his innocence. Meanwhile, the famous detective Gogoro, feeling humiliated due to the disrupted engagement, issues a challenge letter to Endo Heikichi, who is misunderstood as him, vowing to capture the strange man Twenty Faces at all costs. However, Miss Hachiba Yoko, who has always been suspicious of this aristocratic marriage, develops a romantic sentiment with the suspect Endo Heikichi during the critical moment when she is named as the next target.
