**Plot:**

The director transplants the original story, which was set in Hungary, to Spain in the mid-1930s during the Spanish Civil War under Franco's fascist regime. Sixteen-year-old Andrés is forced to drop out of school and return home but is captured on his way and pressed into service as a young soldier. He must quickly learn to live independently. During this period of adolescence, Andrés yearns for love and tries to find true affection with several women, only to be disappointed each time. Eventually, he realizes that only older women can provide him with the essence of life. Through relationships with many mature women, Andrés gradually matures. In the end, he leaves this turbulent land with the woman he loves.
