Introduction to the plot of "New One-Armed Swordsman":

The Yuan Sheng Escort Agency suspects Lei Li (David Chiang), wielder of the "Mandarin Duck Twin Swords," of having robbed their delivery. A conflict ensues between the two parties. Suddenly, the black-market figure Long Yi Zhi appears and helps the Yuan Sheng Escort Agency defeat Lei Li. Lei Li severs his own right arm and works as a helper in a small restaurant, retiring from the江湖(jianghu - martial world). Jin Fen, the head of Hu Wei Manor, and the black-market expert Jin Yi frequently eat at this restaurant. Hu Wei Manor is controlled by Long Yi Zhi. One day, they harass Ba Jiao, the daughter of their neighbor, Mr. Ba the blacksmith. Lei Li wants to save her but feels powerless due to his one arm. The wandering swordsman Feng Jun Jie (Ti Lung), who comes to eat at the restaurant, rescues Ba Jiao. That night, Ba Jiao gives Lei Li her family's heirloom sword. On her way home, Ba Jiao encounters Jin Fen and Jin Yi trying to abduct her up the mountain. Hearing Ba Jiao's cries for help, Lei Li wields the sword to rescue her, and Feng Jun Jie once again intervenes to save Ba Jiao. Lei Li and Feng Jun Jie become friends. After returning to the manor, Jin Fen and Jin Yi report the incident and summon Long Yi Zhi. Feng Jun Jie does not heed Lei Li's advice and accepts Long Yi Zhi's challenge, ultimately dying under Long Yi Zhi's three-section staff. Lei Li diligently trains in martial arts, mastering the skill of wielding three knives with one hand, eventually killing Long Yi Zhi, and marries Ba Jiao happily.

[Editing Section] Film Evaluation

This film is a representative work directed by Chang Cheh, filmed beautifully, showcasing violence and the masculine strength of men. Previously, the status of female leads in Hong Kong cinema was much higher than that of male leads, but Chang Cheh changed this situation. In Chang Cheh's wuxia films, whether it be "The One-Armed Swordsman," "New One-Armed Swordsman," or "King of the One-Armed Swordsman," what is ultimately conveyed is a bond of friendship between men, embodying a masculine wuxia film, which later profoundly influenced Wu Yusen's perspective on the jianghu.

The first Hong Kong film in history to gain international acclaim and break the million-dollar box office mark, Director Chang Cheh's "The One-Armed Swordsman" was adapted from Ni Kuang's wuxia novel, with Lau Kar-leung serving as the martial arts choreographer. Not only did the film series achieve box office success, but it also made stars out of Wang Yu, Ti Lung, David Chiang, and other rugged men. "The One-Armed Swordsman," "King of the One-Armed Swordsman," and "New One-Armed Swordsman"—these three wuxia films produced by Shaw Brothers Studio in the 60s and 70s—are works that ignited the "New Wuxia Era" in Hong Kong cinema and are masterpieces that brought Chinese martial arts onto the big screen, influencing the global film industry ever since.

Chang Cheh is widely recognized as the pioneer of the "New Wuxia Era" in Hong Kong cinema in the 20th century. The main theme of his films is turning weakness into strength, reviving the spirit of martial valor, and reinvigorating the image of male heroes; wuxia righteousness means fighting to the death for oneself, for one's friends, and for one's nation; his style is rough and masculine, thus establishing the mainstream trend of Hong Kong films led by male stars.
