Plot Introduction:

Mario (Massimo Troisi), the son of a fisherman, isn't particularly fond of the sea, yet he becomes a postman responsible for delivering mail on a small island.

Living on this island are Chilean poet Neruda (Philippe Noiret) and his wife. Exiled to this place, Neruda is gifted at writing poetry and brimming with talent. Mario frequently handles many of Neruda's letters. With repeated interactions, Mario increasingly admires this poet, enthusiastically discussing and learning about poetry from Neruda. After falling in love with a beautiful young woman on the island, Mario often confides in Neruda, ultimately winning the woman's heart with poetry, and they get married.

Even after Neruda leaves the island, Mario continues to hold a deep passion for poetry. He keeps writing poems and plans to read them at a workers' gathering, but unexpectedly faces a disaster.
