The Hong Kong wuxia film "Chasing Shadows" is co-directed by the eccentric master Wu Zhenyu and Mai Zishan, known as the "first cutter of Hong Kong films", with Ma Yucheng, a top disciple of Cheng Xiaodong, serving as the martial arts director. "Chasing Shadows" tells the story of the turmoil at the end of the Ming Dynasty, where experts from both the black and white paths fight in the imperial palace for the "Ming Treasure Map," which then mysteriously disappears. The experts embark on a thousand-mile treasure hunt, eventually settling down in the town where the treasure is located to continue their search. Because this film pays tribute to multiple wuxia classics, it has been hailed by critics as the pioneering work of mainland China's "workshop films." The main cast includes actors Wu Zhenyu, Ruby Lin, Daniel Wu, and Xie Na, among others.
The genre of the film will be wuxia + treasure hunting, the theme will be inn + battle magic, the background will be Ming history + chaos, and the style will be comedy + mystery. The film will unfold its narrative in a chaptered format, incorporating the classic formulas of five renowned directors. Each chapter's title will be the name of a movie: "Chapter One: Incomplete" - Chang Cheh's gut-wrenching battle, "Chapter Two: Spring Breeze Pavilion Incident" - King Hu's inn battle magic, "Chapter Three: Ghost Beating Ghost" - Sammo Hung's zombie ghost battles, "Chapter Four: Hell Without Doors" - Tsui Hark's chaotic world laughter and scolding, "Chapter Five: Bright Moon Sword Snow Night Vendetta" - Chu Yuan's romantic strangeness. The main characters include Yehe Changgong, Gu Yuejin, Xu Xiake, Hong Jialiang, Chu Qianwan, and Nalan Hanjiang. Fans familiar with Hong Kong films should be able to discern the intrigue from the main characters.
In terms of casting, Wei Junzi told reporters that Hong Kong artist Daniel Wu will play the role of scholar Xu Sanguan, who is the landlord of several experts, collecting rent while falling in love with the adopted daughter of a Jurchen expert and a female ninja, adding plenty of dark humor to the experts' treasure-hunting life. Besides Daniel Wu and possible guest appearances by Tsui Hark, Sammo Hung, and others, the actors playing the great heroes "will also be very fun and very unexpected," but Wei Junzi refused to reveal them now, saying, "It's a crazy idea, a bigger gimmick, but for now, it must remain confidential."
