The Shawshank Redemption plot: The story takes place in 1947, when banker Andy is accused of killing his wife and her lover with a gun due to her infidelity. Consequently, Andy is sentenced to life imprisonment, meaning he will spend the rest of his life in Shawshank Prison. Red was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in 1927, and several attempts at parole were unsuccessful. He has now become an "authority figure" in Shawshank Prison; if you can pay, he almost gets anything you want: cigarettes, candy, alcohol, even marijuana. Whenever new prisoners arrive, everyone bets on who will cry on the first night. Red thought that the frail, bookish Andy would surely cry, but Andy's silence made him lose four packs of cigarettes.
