Plot Summary:

In the early 1980s, at the Dafeng Cotton Mill in Shanghai. Axiang, a female worker from the countryside, hears that girls in Shanghai have a habit of competing to wear beautiful clothes, known as "chopping clothes" or "chopping skirts." She then asks an individual clothing vendor, "Little Suzuki," to buy her a beautiful red silk dress to resist being mocked as a country bumpkin by her fellow female workers. The model worker Tao Xing'er is very fond of this red dress and secretly tries it on. Axiang notices how beautiful Tao Xing'er looks in the red dress and invites her to go "chopping skirts" in the park together. The shift supervisor, however, disapproves of the revealing red dress, so Tao Xing'er secretly adds a white collar and cuffs to it. But these additions are quickly torn off by her companions.

Encouraged by her friends, Tao Xing'er eventually joins the other female workers in the park. With great courage, she walks alone through the crowd, boldly showing off the red dress against various colorful skirts. Her confidence overshadows all other beautiful dresses. Through the experience of "chopping skirts," Tao Xing'er feels a sense of liberation and begins to realize the constraints of old-fashioned ideas upon herself.
