Belmondo plays a member of the French special forces who is betrayed by his friends and the French government while on a mission in an African country, becoming a prisoner of that African nation. In the prison camp, he endures inhumane torture and eventually escapes with the help of his fellow inmates, returning to France. His sole thought is to seek justice from the French government.

The French government, on one hand, sends people to pursue him, and on the other hand, tries to lure him into a trap using his wife and friend as bait, but he sees through all their plans. At this time, the president of that African country is visiting France, and Belmondo successfully arranges for the sniper sent by the French government to kill him to instead assassinate the president.

In the final scene of the movie, he calmly walks out of the president's temporary residence. In front of his friend and archenemy, he heads straight toward the helicopter that was supposed to pick up the president, leaving the French government at a loss. Ultimately, the prime minister gives the order to the sniper to "stop him." Just as he steps onto the helicopter, the sniper fires a shot at him.
